Covered passages in Paris
They have been developed for only 60 years, from the late seventeenth to mid-nineteenth century.
Each passage has its own characteristics but they all have one thing in common – these are all private roads open to the public or not, depending on the private owners.
Innovative, both in architectural form and by their social role; Systematically lined with shops, the passages are places of great diversity. Mostly inhabited by floor, they mingle luxury shops, toy shops, theaters, bookshops and restaurants.
Among the sixty covered walkways that existed in their day, there remains a dozen, grouped on the right bank. Most are either classified as a historical monument, are registered as a historical monument or protected by the local Master Plan / protection of Paris.
